The definition of a mantra is a mystical formula of invocation or incantation (Hinduism.) In Vedism, it is translated to sacred utterance. They are chants made up of specific syllables, to aid us in our spiritual evolution and they are extremely important to our growth. They come from the second oldest language known to man, Sanskrit. Sanskrit contains many ancient texts from which we can draw knowledge.

The first time I ever heard of a mantra was a little over a year ago. I was attending this online class and the teacher had mentioned a mantra she liked to use personally. So, I decided to do some digging. I searched into mantras and what they were as well as the meaning of that specific mantra. The mantra was beautiful and had a deep meaning as well. It was to get rid of the ego and gain self-realization. At the time, I had no idea what that even meant, I just knew I found this for a reason and so I continued on. I did a daily meditation practice chanting this mantra over and over 108 times for forty days. The very first time I used the mantra I felt like a fake, a fraud. I had thoughts coming into my mind that I didn't deserve such a mantra and that this was for more spiritual people. This was all just the ego trying to talk me out of it. It felt very weird to chant it out loud, especially with my family home on the weekends. After I broke from this train of thought and feeling that came with it, I was able to have the most amazing experience with this mantra. It is almost indescribable. I felt such a loving presence that made me feel awe and love so strongly, I began to cry. It was God. I felt I was starting to grow a better relationship with myself and with God. Now I use them all the time and don't even think twice about it. It's just a natural, daily thing I use.

Mantras can be very powerful and transformative. There are many to choose from for good health for yourself and others on the planet, remembering dreams, self-realization, and seeing the truth beyond what is in front of you. Anything you would need spiritually to grow can be found. There are so many good videos on Youtube to use as guides. It does take time to be able to gain benefits from a mantra. There are many specific, spiritual reasons mantras are suggested to be chanted 108 times. According to the Ayurveda, we contain within ourselves 108 vital points of life force in our body that bring our material self closer to our highest spiritual self. And, as the relationships between the diameters and distances between the sun, moon, and earth correlate with the number 108 as well, which is said to bring resonate vibrations with the universe into our higher selves. Mantras are deeply rooted in our chakras or our bodies' energy centers. Each center has its own syllable that can activate and heal it by chanting it out loud in a specific order. You must be able to quiet your mind and meditate while focusing your intentions on the mantra as you chant out loud or mentally. Play around with the way the vibrations feel as you change frequencies to see which one feels good for you. I invite you to look up some of your own mantra ideas and find one that fits you.
